Thermo Scientific 1342 Biosafety Cabinet features
- 3’ Wide
- Stand included
- New HEPA filters included
- 90-day warranty
Airflow adjustments are made in real time resulting in steady inflow and downflow velocities which includes adjustments resulting from changes in filter resistance. Brushless DC motor technology improves efficiency and reliability and use up to 68% less energy than cabinets with traditional AC motors.
In addition to energy savings, the reduced airflow has the added benefit of extending the filter life with more balanced loading. The impact of these two innovative design features means increased energy efficiency with an annual reduction of up to 2,405 kW-hr of energy (1.7 tons CO2 equivalents) per unit. Therefore, using energy-efficient equipment helps save our customers money.
Thermo Scientific 1342 testing
Our technicians test each bio safety cabinet to ensure that the controls and blower motor work properly. Unless otherwise specified all bio safety cabinets come with new HEPA filters installed by our technicians at our facility prior to shipment. Our testing procedure includes all the elements of a bio safety cabinet certification in order to ensure that the unit will pass certification once it is at your site.

Thermo Scientific 1342 Biosafety Cabinet – Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Thermo Scientific 1342 biosafety cabinet?
The Thermo Scientific 1342 is a Class II Type A2 biosafety cabinet from the 1300 Series, designed to protect personnel, product, and the environment using HEPA-filtered airflow. It is widely used in microbiology, pharmaceutical, clinical, and academic laboratories handling low- to moderate-risk biological agents.
If you’re not sure what type of biosafety cabinet you need – Type A2 or Type B2 – please contact either the sales team at American Instrument Exchange or the technicians at AIE Laboratory Services for more information and guidance.
How does airflow work in the Thermo 1342?
Like other Class II Type A2 cabinets, the 1342 uses a vertical laminar airflow system:
- Inflow air protects the operator from exposure
- HEPA-filtered downflow protects the product
- Approximately 70% of air is recirculated and 30% is exhausted through HEPA filtration
This balanced airflow system ensures containment and sterility during operation.
How energy efficient is the Thermo 1342? Does the Thermo 1342 need to run continuously?
The 1342 is designed for low energy consumption, with:
- Approx. 150 watts during normal operation
- Reduced-flow mode at ~70 watts for energy savings
- Low heat output to maintain comfortable lab conditions
These features make it suitable for labs running cabinets continuously. Like most biosafety cabinets, manufacturer guidance recommends keeping the blower running continuously to maintain a sterile environment and proper containment between uses.
What is included with the Thermo 1342 cabinet?
This Thermo 1342 package includes an adjustable height stand, UV light for surface decontamination, armrests for ergonomic comfort, and new HEPA filters installed at our facility prior to shipping. These bundled configurations simplify installation and improve usability.
Can the Thermo 1342 be ducted or used recirculating?
Yes. As a Class II Type A2 biosafety cabinet, the 1342 can:
- Operate in recirculating mode (returning filtered air to the lab)
- Be connected to a canopy exhaust system if required
This flexibility allows integration into various lab designs. Again, technicians and sales staff at sales team at American Instrument Exchange and AIE Laboratory Services are available to provide information and guidance on different types of BSCs.
What applications is the Thermo 1342 best suited for?
The Thermo 1342 BSC is commonly used in cell and tissue culture, microbiology and virology labs, clinical diagnostics, pharmaceutical and biotech research, and more. It is designed for applications requiring sterility, contamination control and operator protection.
How easy is maintenance and certification?
The Thermo 1300 Series (including the 1342) is designed for:
- Routine NSF certification
- Accessible components for service
- Predictable airflow performance
Proper maintenance ensures consistent containment and long service life.
Why buy a refurbished Thermo 1342 instead of new?
A refurbished Thermo 1342 offers:
- Significant cost savings vs. new equipment
- Proven reliability of the Thermo 1300 Series platform
- Faster delivery compared to OEM lead times
When properly refurbished, these cabinets deliver excellent performance at a reduced cost.
Why choose American Instrument Exchange over auctions or unknown sellers?
Not all used biosafety cabinets are safe to operate. Buying from a trusted supplier ensures:
- Verified airflow performance and HEPA filter integrity
- Proper decontamination and cleaning
- Functional alarms and safety systems
- Reduced risk of failing certification after installation
Auctions sell these units untested and uncertified, which can lead to expensive repairs, downtime, or compliance issues.
When properly refurbished by American Instrument Exchange, these cabinets provide equivalent functional performance at a fraction of the cost.
