hermo Scientific CryoPlus 2 frequently asked questions
What is the Thermo CryoPlus 2 used for?
The Thermo CryoPlus 2 is a liquid nitrogen (LN₂) cryogenic storage system designed for long-term preservation of biological samples at ultra-low temperatures. It is commonly used in research laboratories, biobanks, clinical labs, and pharmaceutical facilities to store materials such as cell cultures, stem cells, tissue samples, and DNA libraries.
The system uses liquid nitrogen to maintain extremely cold conditions in either liquid phase or vapor phase storage, helping preserve biological integrity for extended periods.
How does the CryoPlus 2 maintain ultra-low temperatures?
The system maintains cryogenic temperatures using liquid nitrogen stored inside a vacuum-insulated stainless-steel chamber. The LN₂ gradually evaporates, keeping the internal environment extremely cold.
The CryoPlus series includes microprocessor-controlled autofill capability, which automatically replenishes liquid nitrogen from a supply tank when levels drop below preset thresholds.
This automated refill system helps maintain consistent storage temperatures while reducing manual maintenance.
What types of samples are typically stored in the CryoPlus 2?
The CryoPlus 2 is commonly used to store a wide variety of cryogenically preserved materials, including:
- Mammalian and bacterial cell lines
- Stem cells and primary cells
- Tissue samples and biopsies
- Blood and serum samples
- DNA, RNA, and other biological reagents
Cryogenic storage systems like the CryoPlus 2 are especially important for long-term sample preservation in biobanking and molecular biology research.
What advantages do the CryoPlus 2 and other autofill systems offer compared with manual LN₂ storage tanks?
Compared with traditional manual-fill cryogenic tanks, the CryoPlus 2 provides several operational advantages:
- Automated liquid nitrogen refill system
- Continuous electronic monitoring of temperature and nitrogen levels
- Remote alarm capability for lab safety
- Large, organized storage capacity with rack systems
- Improved workflow for high-volume sample storage
These features make the CryoPlus series suitable for laboratories that require reliable long-term cryogenic storage with minimal manual intervention.
What is the difference between liquid phase and vapor phase cryogenic storage?
Cryogenic storage systems can store samples in either liquid nitrogen (liquid phase) or nitrogen vapor (vapor phase).
Liquid phase storage
- Samples are immersed directly in liquid nitrogen
- Provides the lowest possible temperature (-196 °C)
Vapor phase storage
- Samples are stored above the liquid nitrogen surface
- Maintains temperatures typically below -150 °C
- Reduces risk of cross-contamination between samples
Many laboratories prefer vapor-phase storage for clinical samples and biobanking applications.
What is LN₂ evaporation rate in cryogenic storage tanks?
Evaporation rate refers to how quickly liquid nitrogen naturally boils off from a storage vessel.
Typical evaporation rates range from 2 to 10 liters per day depending on:
- Tank size and insulation quality
- Ambient laboratory temperature
- Frequency of lid openings
- Amount of stored material
Lower evaporation rates indicate more efficient cryogenic insulation.
Can LN₂ storage tanks be connected to remote monitoring systems?
Many modern cryogenic storage systems include remote alarm contacts and monitoring capabilities.
These features allow laboratories to:
- Monitor temperature and nitrogen levels remotely
- Receive alerts for low nitrogen levels or system issues
- Integrate with facility monitoring systems
Remote monitoring helps protect valuable biological samples.
